Date: Fri, Apr 15, 2016, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Recurs: Weekly on Fri, Apr 8 to May 13, 2016

Category: Literature Study

This course is for children who are already avid fans of the American Girls Series and for newcomers who are interested in learning more. Participants will work in Literature Circle groups on individual books within the series. Lessons will include connecting the curriculum to the everyday lives of today's girls.

Lessons will include:
Cooking/Math: Students will make and take recipes from the "old days".
History/Social Science: Students will connect events in history, comparing and contrasting the lives of the characters with the life of a girl today.
Reading: Students will read and respond to literature, answering questions and completing project based activities that require critical thought and analysis of information.
Science/Engineering: Students will engage in activities that require science and engineering concepts, building models of the environment, building materials and other related concepts.

Technology: Google Earth, Coding and Minecraft will provide options for researching or building the setting, developing a scene from the story or producing a presentation that brings the story to life.

Activities will vary based on the specific book chosen by the group and instruction will be driven by the goals of the participating students with guidance from the instructor. The highly academic course will also engage students through a variety of activities that bring the stories to life and create a deeper appreciation for this literature. Our motto for this course, "Leave them wanting more!"
